A French vintage religious medal featuring Saint Symphorien by the French engraver Penin. This is the Catholic patron saint invoked against Syphilis and eye diseases.

"It was in the year 180, in Autun, Burgundy, that the martyrdom of this young saint took place. Born around 159 in a noble Christian family, Symphorien was an educated young man. At the time, Autun still practiced the cult of the Gallic gods, and in particular that of the goddess Cybèle. One day, while the statue was being walked through the streets of the city to be venerated, Symphorien refused to honour it and even mocked the procession. As soon as he was arrested, he was taken to Heraclius, governor of the province. Asked about his behaviour, Symphorian answered that as a Christian he only worshipped the true God.

As he was led out of the city to be beheaded, his mother from the top of the ramparts exhorted him to remain faithful to the end: "My son, my dear Symphorian, remember the living God and be brave to the end: lift up your heart to Heaven and consider Him who reigns there. Do not fear death; it will lead you to eternal life. »
