A magnificient French religious piece from the late 19th century. The wall pendant is finely made of carved alabaster. The medallion is a reverse glass painting. It portrays the Black Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ child: Notre Dame de Liesse (Our lady of Liesse).

"Liesse-Notre-Dame is a commune in northern France. In the Middle Ages, the village near Laon developed around the cult of the Black Virgin, known as Notre-Dame de Liesse (Our Lady of Joy/or Jubilation). Pope Pius IX granted the Marian image a decree of Canonical coronation on 18 August 1857."
"Liesse was a favorite destination for royal pilgrimages, visited by Louis VII, Charles VI, Charles VII and others. Devotion to Our Lady of Joy spread throughout France, particularly to Normandy where there are a number of churches dedicated to Mary under this title."

CONDITION: Antique condition with some signs of ages: three cracks on the alabaster and wears on the painting. Please take a close look at the photos.
