This rare Lorraine Abbess cross pendant named "Croix d'Abbesse" is a stunning French antique pectoral crucifix, crafted from gold-filled metal and dating back to the late 19th century. Measuring 2 7/8 inches in height, the cross is a remarkable example of regional religious craftsmanship from Lorraine, known for its unique and historical significance. "The Lorraine cross, also known as the “abbess cross”, is always single-sided, with engraved decoration and the ends cut in double accolades, with Christ surmounting a skull and crossbones." The large fixed clasp was made for a black velvet ribbon that used to be used as a necklace in the late 19th century.
The gold-filled finish gives it a warm, radiant glow, while its solid construction reflects the exceptional quality typical of religious artifacts from this period. It bears the silversmith's hallmark CZ.
This cross is a rare and meaningful piece, ideal as a special gift for either a woman or man. Its blend of historical significance, religious symbolism, and fine craftsmanship makes it not only a powerful spiritual item but also a beautiful and cherished antique collectible.
