19th-Century Russian Orthodox Icon – “Blessed Womb” | Hand-Painted Tempera on Wood
This exquisite antique Russian Orthodox icon depicts the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child, known as the Mother of God – Blessed Womb (Blazhennoye Chrevo). Richly painted in tempera on wood with a radiant gold background, this icon is a beautiful example of 19th-century religious art.
The traditional Eleusa (Tenderness) pose highlights the intimate and sacred bond between Mary and Jesus. The Cyrillic inscription to the right translates to “Blessed is the womb that bore Thee,” echoing the Gospel of Luke.
